Poetry of the Wild is an environmental art project created by Ana Flores that has travelled throughout the United States since 2003. The core of the project is focused on the creation of poetry boxes made by the community and then installed as a trail through the local landscape. Each box includes a poem, often featuring local writers, plus a journal. The poets involved in the project through the years have been both published and unpublished, ages 9 through eighty years old, and the public has always been invited to write in the journals.

The installations are temporary, lasting 2-6 months. Creating the boxes, making trails, and monitoring inspire collaborations between different groups and encourage walking, land stewardship, and poetry appreciation.

The project has always been structured as an artist residency; as of this year, Flores is sharing the idea with communities as a one-day workshop, seeding the idea so individuals and communities can create their own versions. During the workshop, we will discuss the project’s history in different landscapes, how to build simple poetry boxes, and how to choose or write poems about places we care about. A Zoom meeting for follow up tech support will also be offered to participants.
